Carol Twombly has contributed a significant number of typefaces to the field of typography, with some that are highly regarded within the typographer and graphic designer industry. Between 1988 to 1999, Twombly was employed at Adobe Systems. While she worked there, she created the designs of many popular typefaces that are still available on many Adobe apps and websites to this day.
After she competed in her first international type design competition in 1984, she received an award for “Morisawa gold prize” and her font was named Mirarae. This was her first design, and it is typically used for phototypesetting. In 1994, she won the “Prix Charles Peignot” award to recognize her outstanding contribution to type design. She was able to win all these awards while being a typeface designer under the age of 35 years old, which is an impressive accomplishment.
Carol Twombly has made many fonts in her time as a designer. Her mirarae font has a large X-height with an accented calligraphic rendering and a slight inclination was made in 1984. Trajan was made in 1989 and is based on classical letterforms from Roman inscriptions on the Trajan column. Lithos is a sans-serif font that only uses capital letters and is based on Greek inscriptional lettering dating back to 400 B.C. Chaparral was a font made in 1997 and combines the heavy-serifed faces that were popular in the nineteenth century with the grace that fonts would have in sixteenth-century roman book lettering.
