Ever since Carol Twombly became relevant in the world of designers her contributions to the field have become unforgettable. Up until Twombly entered the typography field, most of the influential designers were historically men. However, due to all of Twombly’s dedication and hard work she became one of the most relevant designers of the twentieth century. Being a woman in a male dominated field is a very inspirational and courageous thing to do. Her influence has encouraged more women to enter the field and has shown strength in pursuing education despite the status quo.
The awards she has won and the accomplishments she achieved during her time in the typographic world has not only had a positive impact on women, but she also left her legacy with many memorable fonts. Twombly’s time at Adobe paid off as she planned and created many of Adobe’s original typefaces during the 1990s. One of the more popular typefaces she made, with the help of Robert Slimbach, was Myriad, a humanist sans-serif typeface. It was intended to be a neutral typeface with a general purpose that could fulfill many uses.
This typeface is very popular with different companies and organizations. Some examples include universities, car manufacturers, supermarkets, department stores, airlines, and much more. She was able to invent a font that was legible, was usable in any context, and had numerous variations. She managed to create a timeless font that is still used to this day. This is just one of the many typefaces that she created that had a huge impact on many industries and people through time.
